Tactical Urbanism Opportunities for Auckland City Centre

The Tactical Urbanism Strategy for Auckland City Centre is a live document that has been developed to identify and analyse opportunities for creating change in Auckland City Centre using a tactical approach. The document is Auckland’s first comprehensive strategy for utilising the emerging design methodology of Tactical Urbanism. The strategy is structured around leveraging the CCMP transformational moves, including the Green Link, City to the Villages and the Laneway Circuit. It presents opportunities in response to the question ‘How can we help to create the world's most liveable city... one small project at a time?’

Tactical Urbanism is a city and/or citizen-led approach to neighbourhood building using short-term, low-cost and scaleable interventions, intended to catalyse long-term change. It has five key characteristics: a deliberate, phased approach to instigating change; an offering of local ideas for local planning challenges; short-term commitment and realistic expectations; low risks with possible high rewards; and the development of social capital between citizens, and the building of organisational capacity between public/private institutions, non-profit sector organisations, and their constituents.
