Safe School Streets

Resilio Studio have been engaged by Auckland Transport's Walking, Cycling and Safety team to develop designs to be trailed outside of schools to increase safety at the school gate and to reduce congestion and illegal parking. The design proposal resulted in a ‘tool box’ of interventions that can be applied to a wide range of contexts and conditions at varying degrees of permanence, reflecting the experimental and controversial nature of some tools. Included within the tool box are ‘tools for placemaking’ which provide opportunities for school staff and students as well as parents and local community members to directly engage in the planning, design and implementation of features to improve safety, traffic management and amenity of school entrances and the surrounding street network, and provides opportunities to integrate some of the interventions into the schools’ curricula.

As of writing, trail demonstrations have been held at Rutherford primary and secondary schools and Owairaka District School.
