Resilio Studio were engaged by Tauranga City Council to lead the design, iwi and community engagement, documentation and construction observation of Kulim Park, Tauranga. Kulim Park is a very popular coastal reserve on the Otumoetai Peninsula and forms part of an open space and shared path network interfacing with the coastal edge of the Tauranga Harbour.
Early engagement with project partners including local iwi and the local community developed buy-in from the local community while providing clear direction from locals to inform the concept design. The key design moves driving the overall design included maintaining and enhancing the existing significant trees; reinstating the foreshore, beach area and connection to harbour; introducing rain gardens to the paved areas and parkland space to improve ecological performance and usability of the park; introducing a new shared path along the coastal edge; and rationalizing vehicle access and consolidating parking. At the time of writing, the project is about to go out for community consultation on the final design after being on hold for 24 months.
